Beyton flooding: meeting called and chaired by David Ruffley makes progress

Thursday, 3 September, 2009

The Highways Agency has today announced that they will contribute £5,000 towards resolving the flooding at Beyton.

This announcement follows David Ruffley's request at the meeting he called and chaired on 24 July that the councils and agencies involved in this issue should go away and consider what financial contribution they can make to resolve the longstanding problem of flooding at Thurston Road, Beyton.

In addition, Mid Suffolk District Council has approved funding for a topographical survey and the production of drawings at a cost of approx £600. Mid Suffolk has already funded the work done to date by NPS which led to the current practical proposal to widen the existing stream to contain the flood water.

Suffolk County Council is investigating sources of funding from DEFRA which, if a bid is successful, could be applied to the Beyton flooding problem.

David said:

'The funding contributions from the Highways Agency and Mid Suffolk District Council take us a step closer to achieving a solution to the flooding at Beyton.

'I called and chaired the meeting in July to bring together the councils and agencies involved in this issue so we could thrash out a way forward. I am very pleased at the positive response from the Highways Agency and Mid Suffolk District Council.

'I am determined to keep up the momentum now we have got this far. My constituents have suffered from flooding in Beyton for long enough.'
