Closure of Urban Post Offices: Ruffley Calls on Government to ensure Full Consultation

Tuesday, 3 February, 2004

David Ruffley has signed Early Day Motion (EDM) 431 in the House of Commons on the Closure of Urban Post Offices. It calls on the Government to ensure that the Post Office closure programme for urban post offices is conducted systematically and only after consulting all relevant parties, including post office users, local public bodies and the local Member of Parliament.

David said: 'Post office closures in the town are getting beyond a joke with Southgate Street and Eastgate post offices closing and now the possibility that Moreton Hall Post Office will close as well. It is vitally important that post offices are not closed without full consultation and without taking into account all the factors involved. Post offices are at the very heart of the local community and need to be easily accessible to everyone. It is crazy for post offices to be closed as part of the closure programme only to find that a large area of town is left with no easy access to post office facilities.'
