David Ruffley MP will welcome the Olympic Torch passing through Bury St Edmunds and attend the Suffolk Youth Games, both at the Abbeycroft Leisure Centre on Saturday 7 July, and a reception for the Rwandan Olympics Team on 8 July at 11.30am at the Athenaeum.
David Ruffley MP said: 'This will be a bumper weekend for sport in Suffolk. The Olympic Torch will be travelling through Bury St Edmunds and I look forward to greeting it as it passes through the Suffolk Youth Games at 4.45pm on Saturday.
This event will be a fantastic opportunity for the whole community to come together to celebrate the countdown to the Olympic Games. Over 95% of the population will be within just 10 miles of the Olympic Flame, as it makes its journey around the UK, before reaching the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012. The torch will be carried by inspirational Torchbearers, each of whom have a story of personal achievement or contribution to Suffolk.
I will also be attending the opening of the Suffolk Youth Games at 9.45am. This is the thirteenth and final year that the Games will be held and is the culmination of three days of events.
The Games will involve around 1,000 young people aged 9-15 years from across Suffolk, representing their district in a wide-range of different sports: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boccia, Cycling, Hockey, Judo, Squash, Table Tennis, Tag Rugby and Tennis.
I shall also be attending the Civic Reception for the Rwandan Olympic Team at the Athenaeum with the Mayor at 11.30am on Sunday 8 July. I greatly look forward to welcoming the team to Suffolk and I look forward to hearing their thoughts on Suffolk and the forthcoming Games.'
