Need for Park & Ride is urgent - MP

Thursday, 5 February, 2009

An MP is urging St Edmundsbury Borough Council to launch a park and ride scheme for Bury St Edmunds.

David Ruffley, MP for Bury and Stowmarket, is attending a meeting about the feasibility of such a service at the council's offices, on Angel Hill, today.

"I have been urging both the county and borough councils to get on with a park and ride scheme in Bury for years," said Mr Ruffley, who was first elected in 1997.

"We need a sense of urgency here. I receive numerous complaints from my constituents who are stuck in queues when driving into town. The need for a park and ride scheme is getting more urgent than ever."

Consultants Mouchel Parkman were commissioned by Suffolk County Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council in 2007 to produce a report on a scheme for the town.

The consultants were expected to produce a draft report by the end of 2007, but this was not submitted until the summer of 2008.

"It is not good enough to allow delay after delay to occur," said Mr Ruffley.

"I am delighted the meeting is finally taking place and I will continue to push Suffolk County Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council to inject some urgency into this issue before Bury grinds to a halt."

Attending the meeting will be representatives of Mouchel Consultancy, who will present the report, bus company First Eastern Counties, Guy McGregor, portfolio holder for roads and transport for Suffolk County Council, and St Edmundsbury Borough Council engineer Steve Boor.
