Ruffley calls for extension of Bury's 20mph zone

Monday, 11 August, 2008

David Ruffley MP has today written to Chief Inspector Mike Bacon, District Commander for St Edmundsbury, asking that he considers the case for the extension of the 20mph speed limit in Bury St Edmunds to cover the Sparhawk Street area.

Residents in the area have expressed concern for their safety after the fourth accident on the road in eighteen months.

David said:

'The problem in Sparhawk Street is clear- motorists are travelling too fast. This latest accident, the fourth in the last eighteen months, has left local residents concerned for their safety. Therefore, I have today written to Chief Inspector Mike Bacon, District Commander for St Edmundsbury, asking that he assess the case for the extension of the 20mph speed limit to cover this area.

'I am aware that local Councillors, Paul Farmer and Richard Rout, have been campaigning for the extension of the 20mph for a considerable period of time and I hope that, by adding my voice to their calls, Suffolk Constabulary may take note and further investigate the situation.'
