Ruffley Continues To Campaign For Suffolk Farmers And Urges Chancellor To Cut Duty On Biofuels

Tuesday, 25 March, 2003

David Ruffley MP has signed an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons calling on the Chancellor to announce a duty reduction for environmentally friendly fuels which would be greatly welcomed by Suffolk's farmers.

David said, 'This EDM highlights the need for the Government to make biofuel usage a possibility. At a recent meeting I held with the Suffolk National Farmers Union most of the farmers in my local constituency of Bury St Edmunds were concerned about the current rate of duty imposed on biofuels. Sadly the bio fuels industry is not flourishing in this country due to the high taxes imposed.

Biofuels are currently more expensive to produce than fossil fuels and reductions in duty are needed to allow these far more environmentally friendly fuels to compete at the pumps like they do in so many countries in the world.'
