Mrs Linda Sherer

Town Clerk

Bury St Edmunds Town Council

I am writing following my conversation with the Mayor of Bury St Edmunds, Cllr Mike Ames, to offer my wholehearted support for the Royal British Legion and Town Council initiative to have all of Bury St Edmunds's war dead honoured in one location.

Cllr Ames has suggested the central war memorial on Angel Hill to be a fit and proper location and I would agree that given the correct permissions that this would be a fitting position to give recognition to our war dead.

It is right that those people from the town who gave their lives for their country be recognised in a memorable and permanent civic way. I understand that the names of the First World War dead have been obtained; however, the list of names of those who died in the Second World War may not yet be complete. I recognise the importance of this task and wish the Town Council and the Royal British Legion every success in collating the required information.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate both the Royal British Legion and Bury St Edmunds Town Council for the efforts they are making to ensure that Bury St Edmunds's war dead are given the respect and commemoration they so richly deserve.

On Remembrance Sunday we all gather as a community to say the words 'We will remember them'. Let us rededicate ourselves to this vow by honouring all our sons of Bury St Edmunds on the Angel Hill war memorial.
