Ruffley to Minister: '60th Anniversary Of D Day Should Be Commemorated For The Sake of Suffolk Veterans'

Tuesday, 17 June, 2003

David Ruffley has thrown his weight behind the campaign by the Royal British Legion, of which he is a member, to ensure that the 60th Anniversary of D Day on 5/6 June 2004 is commemorated in an appropriate manner.

David has signed an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons calling on the Government to 'begin preparations now in order that this extremely important and historic event is commemorated appropriately on its 60th anniversary next year.'

David has also written to the Secretary of State for Defence to register his support for this campaign directly with the Government.

David said: 'D Day was an enormously significant event during the Second World War involving 150,000 service personnel and many sacrificed their lives in the service of their country. Next year is the last significant anniversary of this great event that many Veterans will witness. I call on the Government to ensure that it is commemorated nationally in an appropriate manner.'
