Ruffley offsets carbon emissions for third consecutive year

Monday, 1 June, 2009

David Ruffley MP, the Shadow Minister for Police Reform, has this week offset all the carbon emissions caused by his driving a car over the past 12 months. This is the third consecutive year in which David has offset his carbon emissions.

Climate Care offset carbon emissions by funding projects around the world. Examples of this include:

• Renewable energy- this replaces non-renewable fuel such as coal

• Energy efficiency- this reduces the amount of fuel needed

• Forest restoration- this absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere as the trees grow

David said:

'For the third consecutive year I have offset all of the carbon emissions caused by my driving a car over the past 12 months. While there is no substitute for not causing the emissions in the first place, carbon offsetting is a valuable way in which an individual can help to negate the damage done to the environment by their day-to-day life.

'I hope that by continuing to offset my CO2 emissions other individuals and MPs at Westminster will be encouraged to do the same.

'Climate Care does some excellent work offsetting CO2 emissions through funding projects in areas such as reforestation and renewable energy- it is my hope that my ongoing support will help them continue the vital work they do to safeguard the environment.

'Climate change is a global problem that impacts on us all. Only by acting together, here in Suffolk, the UK and across the world, will we be able to go on to meet the environmental challenges facing us all and ensure that generations to come do not pay the price for inaction.'
