Ruffley to present 'local hero' award to Joan Fry at House of Commons

Friday, 13 June, 2008

David Ruffley MP will present his Woolpit constituent, Mrs Joan Fry, with her award as a 'Local Hero' at the MPs' Heroes' Tea Party official award ceremony at the House of Commons on Tuesday, 24 June.

The award, a national scheme which celebrates older volunteers' achievements, is organised by The Experience Corps and the All Party Parliamentary Group on the Community and Voluntary Sector.

Joan Fry has been an outstanding volunteer in her local community for over forty years, supporting people with disabilities in a practical way and working tirelessly to raise funds for local and national charities which support disabled people.

Joan currently volunteers at Mid Suffolk Axis, driving people with physical and sensory disabilities to their Daytime Activities Group three days each week. Whenever she can, she stays and assists, allowing the staff to spend time with the members.

David said:

'Joan Fry is a very worthy winner of the 'Local Hero' award and I look forward to presenting her with her certificate at the House of Commons on 24 June. Her outstanding commitment to helping disabled people for over forty years is truly remarkable

'Joan has achieved so much for the organisations she has chosen to support, with both practical help and fundraising. I admire her seemingly boundless enthusiasm and commitment to volunteering in the local community.'
