Ruffley raises A143 in Great Barton in House of Commons Question

Monday, 14 January, 2008

David Ruffley MP has today released new House of Commons figures that show exactly how many personal injury accidents have occurred on the A143 in Great Barton.

The new figures, obtained by David during his questioning of Jim Fitzpatrick, Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department for Transport, reveal that between 1997 and 2006, the latest year for which figures are available, there have been 20 personal injury accidents along the short stretch of the A143 that passes through Great Barton.

Unlike previous figures which have been released these new House of Commons figures give specific accident data for the stretch of the A143 through Great Barton.

David said:

'My constituents in Great Barton continually bring the dangers of the A143 to my attention. Earlier in the year I obtained information which revealed the A143 to be one of the most dangerous 'A' roads in Suffolk.

'Now, for the first time, these new House of Commons figures reveal the accident data for the Great Barton stretch of the A143.

'Over the past nine years there have been 20 personal injury accidents in Great Barton. Moreover, these figures would suggest the safety record on the A143 in Great Barton is getting worse not better- seven of the twenty accidents occurred between 2005 and 2006, the latest year for which figures are available.

'I will continue to keep a close eye on the safety record of the A143. In my opinion, and in the opinion of Great Barton residents, it is a road in drastic need of improvement. These new safety figures prove that action needs to be taken to make Great Barton and the A143 safer.'
