Ruffley slams Post Office Ltd over proposal for Gislingham mobile outreach service

Monday, 2 March, 2009

David Ruffley MP has expressed strong opposition in his response to Post Office Ltd's consultation for an outreach service point in Westview Gardens, Gislingham to replace the present Gislingham Post Office.

Post Office Ltd propose parking a large mobile vehicle in Westview Gardens, Gislingham for two hours a day from Monday to Friday. This will replace the busy Gislingham Post Office operated from Gislingham Village Store by Geoff Laurence. Westview Gardens is a quiet cul-de-sac with limited parking.

A decision to close Gislingham Post Office was taken last summer by Post Office Ltd as part of their Network Change Programme. However, Gislingham Post Office remains fully open until an alternative service is set up.

David said: 'The present proposal makes no sense at all and will cause gross disruption to my constituents who live there. My constituents in Westview Gardens currently enjoy peace and quiet. This will be shattered for over two hours every weekday if this mobile post office service is located in their cul-de-sac.

'Post Office Ltd must be getting desperate to find somewhere to park their mobile service if this is the best option they can come up with.

'While I know there is no option in the present consultation to keep the highly successful Gislingham Post Office open, I really do think Post Office Ltd must now revisit the decision to close it. I call on them to think again.'
