Ruffley takes to the streets to save Suffolk's Health Service

Wednesday, 11 October, 2006

David Ruffley MP will be manning a stall on Angel Hill in Bury St Edmunds, on Saturday 14 October between 9.45am and 1pm, to protest against cutbacks in our NHS and to show his support for hard working health professionals across Suffolk.

Supported by local councillors from St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Bury St Edmunds Town Council and Suffolk County Council, David will be listening to the concerns of local people and urging them to sign a petition to save Suffolk's health services from further cutbacks.

David has also organised a stall outside Woolworths in Stowmarket which will be manned by Mid Suffolk District Councillors, Stowmarket Town Councillors and Suffolk County Councillor Anne Whybrow.

David said:

'The NHS is one of our Country's great institutions. I know from being a patient on a West Suffolk ward just how important a service our hard working doctors and nurses provide.

'This Government tells us that more money than ever is going into the NHS but it is simply not reaching the front line and health professionals are not getting the resources they need to do their jobs.

'There isn't a single person, whatever their background, who could say that they will never call upon the NHS. When that time comes we must ensure that they receive the best possible care.

'Nationally the NHS ended last year with deficits of over £1.2 billion while we in Suffolk saw deficits of £50 million. 18,000 jobs have been lost across the Country and hospitals, large and small, are facing cutbacks and closure. Trainee doctors and nurses, the very lifeblood of our NHS, are facing an uncertain future and we must do all we can to support them.

'Local Councillors and I will be taking to the streets of Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket this weekend to show our support for the NHS and its hard working health professionals. We will be sending a message to Gordon Brown that enough is enough and he must end his financial mismanagement of the NHS.

'We are all in this together and together we can save our NHS and stop further cuts to frontline services.'
