Ruffley warns elderly over West Suffolk distraction burglaries

Thursday, 12 June, 2008

Following a spate of distraction burglaries in West Suffolk, David Ruffley MP, the Shadow Minister for Police Reform, has urged local people, especially the elderly, to be very cautious over whom they let into their homes.

The most common trap that local residents fall into is a claim that the visitor is from the 'water board' and urgently needs to gain access to a property because of problems with supply. While they are distracted another person enters the home and goes to the most common places used to store pensions or savings.

David said:

'This despicable spate of distraction burglaries has been taking place in the Haverhill area of West Suffolk and I am concerned that the perpetrators may move further east towards Bury St Edmunds.

'Therefore, I would urge all local people, especially the elderly, to be incredibly cautious over whom they let into their homes. Suffolk Constabulary is currently promoting the 'nominated neighbour scheme' where callers are shown a sign saying the caller should contact their neighbour, who will verify their authenticity. More information about this excellent initiative can be obtained by calling 01473 613 500.

'Local people who are concerned about events in their area can contact their Safer Neighbourhoods Team on 01284 774100. In the event of an emergency, however, they should not hesitate to dial 999.'
