Ruffley welcomes pilot scheme bringing £1million to Suffolk's young people

David Ruffley MP has today welcomed the news that Suffolk County Council is to receive more than £1million over the next two years to support the development of young people through allowing them to take part in activities they enjoy.

The funding has been made available via a Government 'youth opportunity card' pilot scheme.

Suffolk is one of only ten areas in England chosen to participate in the new scheme. The scheme will build on work done through the Suffolk County Council 'eXplore' youth travel and discount cards scheme.

The funding will pay for development of the smart card infrastructure and will also provide 'top ups' to some young people of £12 per person each month, which must be spent on 'positive activities' to help develop skills and confidence.

David said:

'This is fantastic news for Suffolk County Council and young people living in our area. It is recognition of the County Council's hard work in developing the 'eXplore' card and gives them the opportunity for further innovation in this field.

'The funding will enable existing schemes to be developed and potentially young people will be able to use their youth card to pay for leisure activities, transport and even to get discounts on some of their shopping.

'I would like to congratulate Suffolk County Council on securing this funding and I look forward to seeing the results of this extra investment.'
