Ruffley's A14 investigation reveals urgent need for change

Wednesday, 25 October, 2006

David Ruffley MP has today released further House of Commons information revealed during his investigation into the state of the A14 in Suffolk.

David's questioning of Stephen Ladyman, Minister of State for Transport, has shown:

• There were 150 personal injury accidents on the A14 in 2005, the latest year for which figures are available, up from 143 in 2004.

• Only 0.9km or 1.3 percent of the A14 in Suffolk is covered by overhead lighting.

• Between 2000 and 2006 there have been 254 lane closures and 36 total carriageway closures on the A14 in Suffolk due to road accidents.

• Between 2000 and 2006 there have been 2629 lane closures and 111 total carriage way closures due to routine maintenance on the A14 in Suffolk.

• Suffolk receives the second lowest central government funding for road safety of all the counties in the Eastern Region.

David said:

'My investigation into the state of the A14 in Suffolk continues to shed new light on why we are suffering from a spate of accidents on the county's major trunk road.

'Earlier this week I discovered that Suffolk gets drastically inadequate funding for road safety from central government.

'Now new House of Commons figures reveal that only 0.9km of the 70km of the A14 in Suffolk is covered by overhead lighting. That is just over half a mile of lighting on a road that saw 150 personal injury accidents last year.

'None of the A14 around Bury St Edmunds is covered by overhead lighting, despite the fact that well over 40,000 vehicles use that section of the road on a daily basis.

'The A14 in Suffolk is becoming an embarrassment to our county and urgent action is required- there have been over 250 lane closures since 2000 and 36 total carriageway closures in the same period, all because of road accidents.

'I am continuing to investigate the state of road safety on the A14 and have a number of questions and freedom of information requests outstanding.
