Suffolk Schools Review: Ruffley calls County Councillor Patricia O'Brien to House of Commons meeting and is briefed by heads

Tuesday, 9 January, 2007

David Ruffley MP has called County Councillor Patricia O'Brien, Portfolio Holder for Children, Schools and Young People's Services, to a meeting at the House of Commons on Thursday, 11 January to discuss the School Organisation Review recommendations on middle schools. The meeting will also be attended by Suffolk MPs Richard Spring, Tim Yeo, John Gummer and Sir Michael Lord.

The School Organisation Review has recommended changing to a two tier system in Suffolk, thus abolishing all 40 middle schools in the county.

David wrote to the headteachers of all the schools in his constituency before Christmas asking for their views on the recommendations so that he would be well briefed when he meets Councillor O'Brien.

David said: 'I want to get Councillor O'Brien's thinking on how she expects to deliver this change without causing job losses and damaging closures of facilities. I need to know a lot more than I do at the moment about how a tier of education can be removed without there being losses of jobs and school buildings.

I also want to know what my constituents think about these recommendations. I have set up a survey on my website so people can log on to www.tellDavidRuffley.com to register their views.'

David will also be meeting Paul Elstone, Headteacher of St James Church of England Voluntary Aided Middle School, in Bury St Edmunds on Friday, 12 January to receive a briefing on the local meetings organised by Parents Against Change which take place this week.
