BURY St Edmunds has been chosen to host an international Olympic team for the London 2012 Games.

Athletes from the Rwanda Olympic Team will take up residence in the town before making their final preparations at the West Suffolk Athletics Arena.

Beraho Ignace, president of the central African nation's Olympic Committee, made the announcement in a letter to Warren Smyth, manager of Abbeycroft Leisure, describing the decision to choose Bury as 'wonderful' and the beginning of a lasting legacy between the town and Rwanda.

A foul stench in Bury St Edmunds has been traced back to a sewage misconnection in Looms Lane.

For weeks, the town has been plagued with an unpleasant smell coming from the River Lark.

Anglian Water said last week that investigations revealed sewage was leaking into the river and, having already tried to alleviate the smell by pumping hydrogen peroxide into the water, it was now keeping its fingers crossed for rain.

ST EDMUNDSBURY Cathedral was packed with more than 250 successful students as they were awarded their graduation certificates on Saturday.

It was only the second time University Campus Suffolk (UCS) has held a formal ceremony to honour the efforts of students from Bury St Edmunds.

David Ruffley MP was a guest at the event as degree certificates were presented by professor Colin Riordan, vice chancellor of Essex University.

Mr Ruffley offered his congratulations to all this year's successful graduates.

THE uncertainty surrounding the future of some of Suffolk's middle schools yesterday divided opinions among head teachers.

One head teacher described the situation as 'utterly ridiculous'' claiming staff and pupils were being left in the dark over the future of their schools.

However, another applauded Suffolk County Council for its action, claiming it had been left with no choice due to the uncertainty over funding for its restructuring of the county's educational system.

Funding to try to tackle a long standing problem with flooding in Beyton, has been approved.
The Highways Agency announced today it will contribute £5,000 towards resolving the issue, while Mid Suffolk District Council has approved funding for a topgraphical survery and drawings at a cost of around £600.

The boss of a Bury St Edmunds-based recruitment agency says he has every reason to feel optimistic after seeing growth in the local and international economy.

Amid the doom and gloom of the recession, Energy Resourcing and its sister company Anglian Resourcing formally moved into new purpose-built offices in Eastern Way on Friday.

WORK to permanently solve flooding issues on a section of the A14 will finally get underway in the New Year.

Problems with subsidence have been plaguing motorists at the upgraded Rookery Crossroads section at Rougham, near Bury St Edmunds since it reopened in 2006.

Remedial work to stop the road from sinking after a large slump appeared in the carriageway will take place in January, Highways officials have confirmed.
