New figures released in Hansard in answer to a Written Parliamentary Question from David Ruffley MP, show that the number of convictions and custodial sentences for drink and drug driving offences is on the increase in Suffolk. |

“The figures that I have obtained from the Home Secretary show a very worrying rise in the number of convictions for drink and drug driving. It’s clear this is still a big problem. The figures for 2004, the latest year for which figures are available, show a rise of almost 50% since 2000. In 2004 alone there were more than 1,300 convictions for drink and drug driving. |

“Whilst I am happy to praise the work of the local police in trying to combat this problem I am deeply concerned by these figures. There are still too many people who drink, and then don’t think, before they drive. Innocent people are then left to suffer the consequences of their actions. I have now tabled further questions in the House of Commons to ask whether this rise in convictions for drink driving has resulted in more deaths from alcohol related accidents on Suffolk’s roads.” |
