THE number of yobs repeatedly committing crimes has soared by 60% since 1997, figures revealed today.

Ministry of Justice figures revealed the number of Persistent Young Offenders (PYOs) in England and Wales increased from 9,868 in 1997 to 15,819 last year.

The number of offences they commit each year has risen by more than 80% - to nearly 80 every day.

Government accused of failing to tackle yobs

THE number of yobs repeatedly committing crimes has soared by 60% since Labour came to power, new figures revealed today.

Ministry of Justice figures revealed the number of Persistent Young Offenders (PYOs) in England and Wales increased from 9,868 in 1997 to 15,819 last year.

The number of offences they commit each year has risen by more than 80% - to nearly 80 every day.

A Persistent Young Offender is someone aged 10-17 sentenced for a recordable offence three times or more over three years.

David Ruffley MP has this week hit out at the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA) over proposals that will see the number of additional traveller pitches required in the St Edmundsbury Borough Council area by 2011 increased from 15 to 20.

The Government Office for the East of England (Go-East) is currently consulting on the proposed changes in the region and the deadline for responses is 22 May 2009.

The reasons given by EERA for the pitch increase in St Edmundsbury were as follows:

David Ruffley MP has this week contacted the major supermarkets in his constituency asking them to do more to introduce clearer packaging for their products.

David has been running a survey online at www.telldavidruffley.com seeking local residents' views on the clarity of food labelling.

Some of the key results from David's survey, which has received nearly 120 responses, are as follows:

• 78% of people find it difficult establish the country of origin of a product

• 97% think the country of origin could be more clearly displayed on a product

David Ruffley MP is chairing a meeting with Councillor Tim Passmore, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council (MSDC), and representatives of Parish Councils in his constituency on Friday, 12 June.

David has arranged the meeting in response to concerns expressed to him by several local parish councils- Beyton, Drinkstone, Elmswell, Gislingham, Hessett, Hinderclay, Thurston and Tostock- about the way in which Mid Suffolk District Council deals with local planning applications.

David Ruffley MP will attend the official opening of the new Haughley Post Office at 10.20am on Friday 12 June by the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

Haughley Post Office has re-opened thanks to the generous bequest by Maxwell Charnley of £500,000 to Haughley Parochial Church Council which used the money to buy the Post Office premises after the retirement of the previous sub-postmistress, Maureen Edwards.

David Ruffley MP, the Shadow Minister for Police Reform, has this week offset all the carbon emissions caused by his driving a car over the past 12 months. This is the third consecutive year in which David has offset his carbon emissions.

Climate Care offset carbon emissions by funding projects around the world. Examples of this include:

• Renewable energy- this replaces non-renewable fuel such as coal

• Energy efficiency- this reduces the amount of fuel needed

• Forest restoration- this absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere as the trees grow
