David Ruffley MP has welcomed announcements by British Telecom and the Secretary of State for Media, Culture, Sport and the Olympics, Jeremy Hunt on investment of broadband provision to homes and businesses in the Bury St Edmunds constituency.

David Ruffley said:

'BT announced on Tuesday that it would be developing twelve more exchange areas in Suffolk, one of which will directly benefit residents in Stowmarket. I am pleased to hear that BT expect the work to be completed by autumn next year.

"New unemployment figures for July 2011 are yet again a mixed bag.', says David Ruffley MP.

Nationally the number of people aged 18 or over claiming Jobseekers Allowance increased by 37,100 between June and July 2011 to 1.56 million people. This is the largest monthly increase since May 2009. However, the number of people in employment rose by 25,000 over the past quarter and by 251,000 over the past year to reach 29.27 million in April-June 2011.

On Friday 15 July, David Ruffley met with Head Teachers of local first, middle and upper schools at Thurston Community College to discuss the apparent derailing of the change to two tier schooling by the recent granting of Academy status to Needham Market Middle School, Combs Middle School and Stowmarket Middle School.

David Ruffley said: 'New figures reveal the 'war on motorists' has bagged nearly 1 billion pounds for the Treasury since 1997. By means of a written Parliamentary Question, I have discovered that 17,112,980 fixed penalty notices have been issued to motorists in England and Wales for speeding since 1997.

Since 1997 there were 311,523 fixed penalty notices issued in Suffolk. This cost motorists in Suffolk the huge sum of £17,924,200. In 1997, there were 7,271 offences raising £290,840. In 2009, there were 42,055 offences raising £2,523,300.
