David Ruffley MP secures first Big Society Ministerial visit to Suffolk

On 30 June David Ruffley will be welcoming the Minister for Civil Society, Nicholas Hurd MP to Bury St Edmunds on his first 'Big Society' visit to Suffolk.

The Minister will be attending the launch of the new Open Road rehabilitation centre in Bury St Edmunds at 12.30pm, followed by speaking at a Big Society conference at the Apex conference centre, chaired by David Ruffley MP, starting at 12.55pm until 3.00pm.

Commenting on new statistics on the Suffolk economy fromthe Nationwide 'Parliamentary Constituency Profiler' Mr Ruffley said:

'New figures out this week show 15% of the workingpopulation of Bury St Edmunds are in skilled trades, as opposed to 11% of theUK wide working population. Only 10% of our local population have noqualifications whatsoever, whereas the UK wide average is worse at 13%. Thisclearly shows that the people of Bury St Edmunds have the know how and drive tobounce back in these difficult times.

David Ruffley MP to Attend 16 Air Assault Brigade Service of Remembrance

David Ruffley MP will attend a Service of Remembrance for the 16 Air Assault Brigade on 8 June at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. The 16 Air Assault Brigade is the largest unit in the British Army, elements of which are based at Wattisham in Mr Ruffley's constituency.

On 20 May David Ruffley will be joining the children of Ickworth Park Primary School for lunch as well as taking a tour of the classrooms.

Mr Ruffley said: 'We are entering a crucial phase in the school reorganisation of the Bury St Edmunds Pyramid. The overwhelming majority of primary schools in Bury want to proceed to a two tier system well before 2017 which was pencilled in as a deadline by Suffolk Local Education Authority.

I agree with my primary school Head teachers but this involves some big questions:

On 17 May 2011 David Ruffley MP will visit the Rehab Works Centre in Bury St Edmunds and hold a meeting with the Chief Executive Mr Lutgen Terblanche.

Mr Ruffley said: ' There are nearly five million people of working age on out-of-work benefits and nearly 1.4 million of those have been on these benefits for nearly a decade. Yet many of them can do some work and want to do so. People who can work should work.
